A bit about workshops
These intensive workshops are for adults and older young people 14yrs+ unless specified. Complete beginners, those with experience and practising artists alike - all are welcome! Even if you have never done art before and just long to have a go. Places are limited. Groups will all be small and friendly.

Come alone, with a friend or a small group. Athena Jane has over 20 year's experience working with people and their creativity, helping both artists and those who have never made art before to develop their creativity and expression in art.

She provides step by step tuition, taking you gently on a fun journey into your own way of creating and making creative processes easy and accessible. Plus, there's always cake! Cake always helps creativity!

Sparkling Jewelled Birds - A 3D Exploration
Sunday 21st January 2024 10am - 4:30pm

Sparkle up those cold January days and start the New Year sculpting your own little bird of freedom. It is gorgeous fun making these birds! So much fun that Athena Jane created very nearly 500 jewelled bird sculptures for her next installation.
In this fabulous sparkling workshop, she will take you step by step to making your own beautiful, intricately beaded and jewelled bird. Using modelling techniques with Epoxy Putty, Plastic, wire, vintage and new crystal, glass, and acrylic beads, upcycled and recycled jewellery, handmade Italian papers and gold metal leaf, the process is a complete joy.

Micro Mosaics Hanging Tin Shrines
Saturday 24th February 10am - 4pm
This workshop is so much fun. Learn and develop the principle techniques of mosaics, tile cutting, fixing, and grouting, but in miniature. Create a hanging decoration, or shrine in a tin, use tiny tiles, even beads and bits of jewellery- learn to cut up bone china, and tiny bits of standard glass tiles, saucers and plates, everything you might do in a larger mosaic, but with the chance to slow down and hone intricate mosaicing skills too. All the fun but a chance to get really detailed and make a mini mosaic in a day. Some patience and tweezers may be necessary!

Faces from the Past and Present.
Mixed Media Painted Panel
Saturday 24th March 2024 10am - 5pm
Exploring images from antiquity and mythology, or contemporary faces, (you can bring your own photo to draw from if you like), Jane will take you on a journey to make and create your own mixed media painting on a wooden panel and show you the techniques she uses to make her work feel ancient, textured and weathered like fragments of old frescoes.
​
Drawing upon her theatre background, using layers of texture and paint, gold metal leaf, and crackle glaze techniques, Jane will show you how she makes her icon inspired paintings. Experiment and take home your own artwork with that aged, magical feel.

Saturday 13th April and Sunday 14th April
Two Day Mosaic Intensive Weekend 10am-5pm
This two day weekend course gives more time, so more ambitious pieces can be undertaken over two days. Athena Jane has been commissioned to create mosaics for many settings. She will show you everything you need to know and enable your designs so that you can mosaic whatever you wish to. Some clients have requested this workshop because they are keen to tackle a small indoor mosaic table, a large flowerpot or outdoor paver or to have more time for cutting tiles in detail for a piece of wall art.
​
The course includes a consultation call in advance to work out what you want to make, what colour mosaics you want to use and what is needed so Jane can tailor make your weekend mosaicing for you. She will gather materials for you and enable the days so that you have all you need no matter what your level of mosaicing ability.
If you would prefer to book for just one of the two days, that is also possible (places permitting!). It is great fun to mosaic. You can use this session to kick start a bigger idea you may have been thinking of. Materials will be provided (except for massive pieces or tables where the base would not be covered by the cost), but all can be discussed and confirmed during the consultation process.

You will have access to all Athena Jane's tiles and equipment- hundreds of colours and types of tiles plus specials, micro dots, mini tiles, luminescence and glittering ranges. As well as using vintage bone china, and found elements if required.

A bit about the Venue
Workshops take place at Laughton Lodge, in a rural 23 acre site set in beautiful Sussex countryside.

Free Parking on site.
Please park in the car park on the left as you come into Laughton Lodge and walk straight down the main drive where signs will direct you to the Dining Room. If you need to park nearby for mobility or health reasons, please just let Athena Jane know. You will be able to drive further down the drive to the main Shawfield building (on the right) to park outside it. It is about 100m from the car park to Shawfield.

Access: The workshop room is accessible and all on ground level with accessible toilets in the building.
​
During warmer weather Laughton Lodge is a perfect place to wander and connect with nature and in winter the wood fire burner in the dining room will keep us cosy.
With a lot to do nearby (20 minutes from Brighton, 10 minutes from Lewes, close to the South Coast and the South Downs), it is an ideal spot to come for the workshop, but stay in the area for a weekend.
